ABOUT SANGANO CHILDREN'S HEALTH

HOW DID THIS START?

The journey began in Zimbabwe, where Norman Musewe was born and raised. Life in his homeland was far from easy—daily hardships were the norm, and access to medical care was especially scarce. For Norman, the struggle became deeply personal as he watched his mother face these challenges with limited medical support. From that hardship, a spark was ignited—first a desire, then an unshakable conviction—to become a doctor. During his medical internship, Norman's path took a poignant turn. A rotation in a pediatric ward left an indelible mark on him. One moment, in particular, would haunt him for decades: the death of a severely malnourished child under his care. It was a loss that pierced his heart and solidified his calling. His medical training led him from Zimbabwe to the United Kingdom and then to Canada, where he refined his expertise at some of the world’s leading pediatric institutions, including the renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Yet, even as he excelled abroad, Norman couldn’t ignore the painful contrast between the well-resourced hospitals of North America and the underfunded, overburdened systems of Sub-Saharan Africa. The disparity in children's health care was not just glaring—it was unacceptable. For years, he held a vision in his heart: what if children in Zimbabwe and neighboring countries had access to the same level of care he saw in Canada? After four decades of serving children in Canada with compassion and skill, that vision is no longer just a dream. It has become a mission. Now, joined by colleagues and friends who share his passion for pediatric care in Africa, Norman Musewe is taking the bold step of returning to where it all began. With their support, he is working to establish a world-class children’s health facility in Zimbabwe. In many ways, this next chapter is a homecoming—one that’s filled with purpose, hope, and a deep sense of fulfillment.

WHAT DOES SANGANO MEAN?

Sangano is a word from Shona—the main language spoken in Zimbabwe—that means “a place of meeting.” But it’s more than just a physical space. It reflects the powerful idea of people coming together as a community to work toward a common goal. The word captures the spirit of unity, collaboration, and shared purpose. Using Sangano sends a strong message: this isn’t something we’re doing for the community, it’s something we’re doing with them—side by side.
